35% of Armenians do not receive enough calories; junk food is a big problem

Pipoyan, National Academy of Sciences: A comprehensive study about the consumption of 88 types of foods was conducted in Yerevan and provinces. We finally have data from a large study. It will help us examine separate groups to develop policies.

Our research has uncovered malnutrition, poor eating habits, and an unbalanced diet. We found that 23.5% are poor, 11% medium poor, and 1% extremely poor.

We have provinces where 35% of the population receives 75% of their calories from bread, potatoes, and flour products. 35% of the population receives 1,600 calories, which is insufficient.

Malnutrition is not unique to low-income families. The COVID pandemic had a massive negative impact on families with sufficient income. Many well-off people stayed home and began consuming junk food, sweets, and chips.

Mnatsakanyan, Healthcare Ministry: There is a need for serious work to promote a healthy lifestyle and diet in Armenia because 50% of non-transmissible diseases are a result of poor lifestyle.

30% of children consume chips every day. They see the ads and mimic the adults. Healthcare Ministry cannot fight this alone. We need to educate children starting kindergarten age.

We formed a taskforce that includes scientists, various agencies, and international organizations. The group will discuss legal amendments and public awareness campaigns.

Pipoyan: Sometimes the student has no choice but to eat poorly because of breaks being too short. Where is the student supposed to obtain vegetables and beans, and do they have enough time to eat? The taskforce will discuss these issues. //

European Court of Human Rights: Muradyan vs Armenia

ECHR has ruled that Valeri Muradyan's right to life was violated. His mother will receive €20,000 in compensation from the Armenian government.

Muradyan was a conscript who was found dead in 2010, months after joining the army. The authorities ruled it a suicide. His $6 debt to another serviceman was mentioned as the reason.

His family, however, believes Muradyan was killed. He allegedly called them days before the incident and reported witnessing fuel embezzlement in the army. The family believes the alleged thieves killed him.

The autopsy had revealed bruises and scratches on his hand that were inflicted 2-4 days before his death. The authorities said it happened while he was fixing vehicles.

The following year, the authorities charged a fellow serviceman with assaulting and humiliating Muradyan over the $6 debt, but the case was dropped in 2015 amid a lack of evidence.

In 2018 the court ruled that the investigation was ineffective because it was too slow. The authorities were told to launch a new investigation. It's in progress.

was Yerevan Metro open yesterday? 🤔

[Tuesday news](https://www.reddit.com/r/armenia/comments/tx5ygt/your_daily_news_digest_from_armenia_tuesday/) has context. The opposition alliances led by Kocharyan, Serj, and ARF gathered in Opera square yesterday. Besides what was mentioned yesterday, they also called for Pashinyan's removal/resignation. The protests will become "routine".

Ruling party MPs criticized the rally as "primarily focused on coming to power, rather than Artsakh".

QP Torosyan: Even the April War was presented as a victory, when in fact, we suffered losses. It's as if they live in a parallel reality. But I think people understand everything. I'm glad they were able to assemble freely. Metro was operational and there were no repressions, unlike in the past. //

anti-corruption: Armenia asks Netherlands for help to return resources laundered out of the country

Chief prosecutor Arthur Davtyan hosted Netherlands ambassador Nico Schehrmers on Wednesday.

Davtyan: Thanks for coming. I hope this meeting will be a new impetus for deepening cooperation between the law enforcement agencies of our countries, considering the high level of relations that are developing on the basis of mutual trust.

It is especially important to deepen the cooperation now, to improve the efficiency of Armenia's fight against corruption and the process of confiscating illegally-obtained properties.

Large amounts of resources were illegally taken out of Armenia. Some of it was taken to Europe. Therefore, close cooperation with European countries, including the Netherlands, is essential.

anti-corruption: authorities recover financial damage allegedly done by ex-mayor of Tsakqar

Authorities report: The 2002-2021 mayor of Tsakqar (Gegharkunik) learned that the international IBRD bank was financing a program to help a utility company acquire lands for installing power lines.

The mayor rushed to sell the lands to his wife and friends, so they could later sell them to the utility company for a higher price. The municipal workers signed the papers and submitted them to the government for approval in 2016.

The new owners then sold the lands to the utility firm for $30,000. The ex-mayor and three municipal employees are facing multiple criminal counts. The ex-mayor has returned the funds. //

Գյումրիում տնակների թիվն ուռճացված էր: Shirak governor

Infrastructure Ministry and Shirak government discussed issues relating to housing for 1988 earthquake survivors. There are still families who are yet to receive one.

Some residents continue to live in makeshift homes (tnak) despite receiving housing, because their families have grown bigger since the earthquake so the new apartments were given to the second generation, while the parents remained in makeshift homes. Shirak governor said they can't provide double-assistance in these situations, but at the same time, they can't force them out of tnaks either.

Governor: NGOs, governor office registry, and municipal registry had different data about the number of people residing in tnaks. The number was exaggerated for electoral purposes. There were registered people who did not exist. This was used as a flexible tool during elections in the past.

This is why we've seen a decrease in the number of registered tnaks in the past two years, and it could reduce even more. We want the Cadastre Committee and satellite photos to be used for verification. As of right now, the discrepancy is in dozens. //

Stepanyan, department official: People call 103 but the operators are often busy, so they think the operators are ignoring them. The new system will soon allow operators to establish contact as soon as they are free.

We get 650 calls every day, down from 1,000 earlier this year. There are peak hours in the evening. The new system will be of great help. We're working with one of the telecom operators to install the system. //
