Until recent years Nakhichevan had a great number of historic Armenian sites, including one of the most impressive in the world, the expansive khachkar cemetery in old Jugha, which contained the largest collection of khachkars in the world, and some of the most advanced and ornate examples in existence. This destruction was on par with the loss of the massive buddhas in Afghanistan, with none of the international coverage. All other Armenian monuments in Nakhichevan, including every remaining church and monastery were completely demolished during this same period.
