Syunik (Սիւնիք; also spelled as Siunik, Siwnik, or Syunig) is one of the provinces of Armenia. Located in the southeast of the country it is bounded by the province of Vayots Dzor to the north, Azerbaijan's Nakhichevan exclave to the west, the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic to the east, and Iran to the south. Historically it has also been known by other names such as Syunia and Zangezur. The present-day Syunik province covers only a portion of the ancient Armenian feudal principality of Syunik from antiquity. Its provincial capital is the city of Kapan.
