Gostan Zarian

Gostan Zarian is a writer.

Zarian has left a great literary heritage but he is a little-studied writer in the Armenian literature.

"If his works are published completely, they will make 20-25 volumes," noted literary critic Yuri Khachatrian.

Zarian created both in the genres of prose and poetry, wrote literary critical and theater critical articles. The Diasporan writer entered the literature writing in foreign languages and became famous by his poem entitled "The Sorrow of the Earth and the Sorrow of the Heaven for Singing Three Songs." At first the poem was written in French but it was published in Italian. The "Tatragom Bride" poem published in 1930 in Boston brought fame to the writer.

According to literary critic, Kostan Zarian is one of the writers whose life is like a novel. Living in Paris, Bulgaria, the US, Germany, he spent the last years of his life in his dreamt homeland, in Armenia.

Zarian not only returned to his homeland but also learnt his native tongue in Venice and created in Armenian. He entered the Armenian literature later, in 1922, by collected works under the title "Wreath of Days" published in Polis.

On October 26 2006 an exhibition opened at the National Library of Armenia in Yerevan. It was dedicated to the 120th anniversary of Kostan Zarian. The exhibits included Zarian's all collected works, Russian, English and French translations of his works kept in library's depositories.
