Dr. Jack Sheen of Santa Barbara, California, son of John Sheen (Hovhannes Geovkalayjian), has very kindly provided the following additional information:
"I really wish that my dad had not changed his name, because most of my life I have been trying to explain why my name is Irish and I look Jewish. I don’t think my dad ever used the full name with Geov but simply Kalayjian. The Geov part was used by his grandfather (he was blue eyed -hence ‘geov'). Kalayjian is the only name I can recall ever hearing until quite late in life when my dad inserted the Geov I would guess for sentimental reasons and some pride in having a relative with blue eyes. Anyway, the name Sheen comes from the root of his name, Kalay which in Turkish means tin which, when coating copper vessels produces a shiny effect, or sheen. He could have chosen Shine for a name but chose Sheen instead.
As you know, his father and brother were killed in the Turkish massacres before he could send for them and I always wondered whether he changed his name for fear of being spotted as being Armenian and not knowing how that would go in his new country, the USA. He was a teenager when he arrived and was probably frightened to death about his future in a strange land."
See SHEEN.
There is still a problem that requires analysis. The Sheen family is not the only Geovkalayjian to be reckoned with. I had previously tracked down a person named Armen Geovkalayjian in Decatur, GA. Her nephew responded to me that her full name was Armenoohie, and was deceased. She came to the USA in 1920 with her brother Lutfik, and sister, Vartoohie from Tarsos, Adana, according to the ship manifest I consulted in Mark Arslan's websire. The nephew did not know the meaning of her surname.
Finally, here is what Cesar Chekijian of Livingston, New Jersey had to say:
"My Aintabtsi maternal grandfather Baruyr Kazanjian used to make metal pots and glaze them with tin. In the early 1950s, I spent few days one summer at his workshop in the seaside town of Jounie, Lebanon. Saw the process of glazing. It was very hot and smelly, as they used some sort of white powder/acid, to give some of the fancy trays and dinnerware with that blueish sheen/hue, after they had been glazed with melted tin.
One archaic example of how they worked was that to clean and smooth the surface of a tray, they laid it on a bed of fine soaked sand, then they stood on the plate, bare feet and started doing left/right turns of their body, rubbing the tray on the soaked sand. They looked like they were dancing!!"
